INDIANAPOLIS (JULY 12, 2017) – The San Antonio Stars earned their second win of the season with a 79-72 victory over the Indiana Fever today at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
Kayla McBride led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 12-for-13 from the free throw line. Erika de Souza shot 7-for-7 from the field to record a season-high 14 points. Dearica Hamby led the Stars bench with 13 points, and Kelsey Plum recorded career highs with 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Candice Dupree led the Fever with 14 points, followed by Briann January with 13 points.
“Getting our first road win of the season was amazing. We worked so hard in practice, so I’m glad it carried over to the game,” said Stars Head Coach Vickie Johnson. “These past few days were very important for us with the work we put in and it showed today.”
The lead changed five times throughout the first quarter as both teams fought for control. Plum scored 8 of her 12 points in the first quarter to lead the Stars. At the end of the period, the score was tied at 16 points.
A layup from January gave Indiana its largest lead of the first half, 32-25, but Hamby responded with a basket to send the Stars on a 12-2 run to end the first half with a 37-34 advantage.
The Stars never trailed in the second half of the game. Shay Murphy connected on a shot from beyond the arc with 5:10 remaining in the game to give San Antonio their largest lead of the game 69-57.
San Antonio continues this three-game road trip Sunday, July 16 at Connecticut. Tipoff against the Sun is set for 2 p.m. CDT.
