Stars Sign Erika de Souza

Three-Time WNBA All-Star and 11-Year WNBA Veteran Joins San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 1, 2017) – The San Antonio Stars today announced that the team has signed three-time WNBA All-Star Erika de Souza. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Erika gives us size and experience in the post,” said Stars General Manager Ruth Riley. “She is a proven All-Star in our league and we are incredibly excited to have her join us in San Antonio.” 

The 11-year WNBA veteran started her professional career in the United States in 2002 when she won a championship with the Los Angeles Sparks. De Souza played the next five seasons overseas before returning to the WNBA with the Connecticut Sun in 2007. Throughout 302 career-games, de Souza has averaged 9.8 points and 7.1 rebounds in 23.8 minutes per game.

The Atlanta Dream acquired de Souza during the 2008 Expansion Draft. During her eight seasons with the Dream, she was voted to the WNBA All-Star game in 2009, 2013 and 2014 and was a member of the WNBA’s All-Defensive Second Team in 2013. De Souza remains Atlanta’s all-time leader in rebounds (1,034), blocked shots (171) and field goal percentage (.535).In July of 2015, de Souza was part of a three-team trade that sent her to the Chicago Sky, where she played for the remainder of the 2015 season and all of 2016.

In addition to her WNBA accolades, de Souza is a Spanish Women’s League Queen’s Cup winner (2014), five-time Spanish National League Champion (2005, 2007-10) and a Hungarian National League Champion (2003). The Rio De Janeiro native has also competed in three Olympic Games (2004, 2012, 2016) as a member of the Brazilian National Team.

The 2017 season home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 19 against the Phoenix Mercury. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. (CST) at the AT&T Center. Season tickets are now available by calling (210) 225-TEAM.
