Stars Sign Jessica Kuster, Karla Gilbert and Heather Butler
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Stars signed forward Jessica Kuster, center Karla Gilbert and guard Heather Butler to their 2014 training camp roster, head coach and general manager Dan Hughes announced today. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Kuster, a San Antonio native from Reagan High School, spent her collegiate career at Rice University, where she became the Owls all-time leading scorer, collecting 2,081 points over her four years. Following her senior season, the 6-2 forward was named AP All-American Honorable Mention after averaging 20.9 points and 13.3 rebounds in 37.8 minutes. Kuster averaged 17.1 points and 11.3 rebounds over her four year career with Rice.
A 6-5 center out of Texas A&M, Gilbert finished her career as the number two shot-blocker in Aggie history. The College Station native recorded 68 blocks in her senior season, setting the schools single-season record. During the 2013-14 season, Gilbert averaged 11.3 points and 7.2 rebounds in 27.8 minutes. In 2011, as a sophomore Gilbert, along with current Stars forward/center Danielle Adams, helped the Texas A&M Aggies win their first National Championship in school history.
A 5-5 guard from the University of Tennessee at Martin, Butler finished her collegiate career as the all-time leading scorer in Ohio Valley Conference history. Following her senior season she was one of five finalists for the Lieberman Award, averaging 23.5 points and 3.4 assists in 36.1 minutes. The Minnesota native scored in double figures in every game of her career and ranks fourth on the NCAA all-time three-pointers made list.
San Antonio Stars training camp begins on Sunday, April 27. The team will face the Tulsa Shock twice during the preseason, on May 2 in Tulsa and on May 6 in San Antonio at the AT&T Center.
The Stars tip-off the 2014 season, presented by CHRISTUS Santa Rosa and H-E-B, on the road on May 16 at 6:30 p.m. against the Atlanta Dream. The Stars 2014 home opener takes place the following night on May 17 at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center against the Tulsa Shock. Ticket plans for the upcoming season are now available.
